Originating from Switzerland in the 19th century, this technique has evolved into a sophisticated method widely used in the manufacturing industry. The distinguishing feature of Swiss lathe turning is its capability to simultaneously perform multiple operations, such as turning, milling, drilling, and threading, on long, slender workpieces in a single setup. This efficiency is achieved by the use of a sliding headstock and guide bushing, which provides excellent support for the workpiece, minimizing vibration and deflection. The result is superior surface finish and dimensional accuracy, making Swiss lathe turning ideal for applications in industries such as aerospace, medical devices, and electronics, where precision is paramount.

At Mitacor Industries, we have a fleet of 8 Swiss-style lathe machines all equipped with bar feeders to aid in high volume precision production. Paired with high quality tooling, these machines are capable of achieving tight tolerances on an array of materials such as, stainless steel, steel, Inconel, titanium, brass, copper, aluminum, plastics, etc.

These Swiss-style turning machines work in parallel with our standard CNC lathes to give us the capability of working on a wide range of diameters from 3/32” to 17 inches.
